CERTIFIED ORGANIC OILS

In the aromatherapy industry, pesticide-free essential oils that are not certified organic are prevalent.

According to Essential Oil University chemist Tanner Wortham, organic farming resources which are

needed to meet organic standards are not always readily available in third-world countries where many essential oils are sourced. Furthermore, while many farmers living in third-world countries choose to farm without the use of pesticides, their products may not be considered organic because of costs associated with organic certification.

CONVENTIONAL OILS

Aromatherapist Robert Tisserand states that there may be no difference between organic and conventional essential oils due to the insignificant amount of pesticides typically found in conventional essential oils.

BERGAMOT ESSENTIAL OIL:

PRINCIPAL CONSTITUENTS: Known to have about 300 compounds present in the expressed oil: mainly linalyl acetate (30–60 per cent), linalol (11–22 per cent) and other alcohols, sesquiterpenes, terpenes, alkanes and furocoumarins (including bergapten, 0.30–0.39 per cent).

ACTIONS: Analgesic, anthelmintic, antidepressant, antiseptic, antispasmodic, antitoxic, carminative, digestive, diuretic, deodorant, febrifuge, laxative, parasiticide, rubefacient, stimulant, stomachic, tonic, vermifuge, vulnerary.

MEDICINAL HOME USE:

Skin Care: Acne, boils, cold sores, eczema, insect repellent and insect bites, oily complexion, psoriasis, scabies, spots, varicose ulcers, wounds. alleviates painful skin conditions, including acne, abscesses, psoriasis , and boils; relieves itchy skin; balances oily skin; comforts coughs ; reduces cold symptoms; soothes insect bites and cold sores; prevents halitosis.

OTHER USES: Extensively used as a fragrance and, to a degree, a fixative in cosmetics, toiletries, suntan lotions and perfumes – it is a classic ingredient of eau-de-cologne. Widely used in most major food categories and beverages, notably Earl Grey tea.

Respiratory System: Halitosis, mouth infections, sore throat, tonsillitis.
Digestive System: Flatulence, loss of appetite.
Genito-urinary system: Cystitis, leucorrhoea, pruritis, thrush.
Immune System: Colds, fever, flu, infectious diseases.
Nervous System: Anxiety, depression and stress-related conditions, having a refreshing and uplifting quality. Promotes feelings of peaceful relaxation; alleviates stress and anxiety.

APPLICATION

Dilute according to reason for application. This essential oil is suitable for direct inhalation, diffusion and topical application when diluted.

SAFE USE

Bergamot essential oil is generally considered safe; however, it is not recommended for use with children younger than five years old. Applying Bergamot essential oil without diluting it first can cause skin irritation, and repeated use can lead to contact sensitization. It is extremely phototoxic; direct sunlight and UV light should be avoided for as long as seventy-two hours after use.
